VENICE AND THE ART OF PERFUMERY
The City of Venice is known as one of the most romantic cities in the world – with
its unique canals, bridges, charismatic gondolas and divine piazzas is the perfect
romantic destination for lovers!
But Venice is not only known for its Murano glass and colorful Carnival masks,
Venice became the center of the perfume trade since the Middles Ages, spreading
the art of perfumery to other European countries. A major trade route between the
Orient and Venice was created, unknown spices, tea, and fragrances were loaded
onto Venetian vessels to be sold as luxurious and precious goods. These new
ingredients and raw material gave birth to the development of Italian perfumes.
Venetian Master-Perfumers (Maestri-Profumieri) began inventing, creating and
combining artistically these new exotic oils and spices, and preserving them in fine
Murano glass bottles.
During this initial and glorious period, Venice captured the attention of surrounding
countries with its highly prized Murano glass. Soon, the first perfumer’s boutiques
were opened in Venice.
Then came the Renaissance period, Venice and Florence were the capitals of
perfumes, the Medicis and the Venetian Doux courts were perfumed. During the
reign of Catherine de Medici (the Medici family, probably the richest family during the
Renaissance period) in France perfumes flourished. Catherine brought her own
perfumer, Rene le Florentin from Italy with her.
Today in Venice, there are still perfumery companies that create perfumes of the
finest quality by keeping alive the grand tradition of fragrance creation characteristic
of the Venetian Maestri-Profumiere. Mavive Spa, headquartered in Venice, is one of
Italy’s most acclaimed perfumery and cosmetic companies, founded by the Vidal
family of Venice, in this business for four generations. Mavive’s newest creation is
its MONOTHEME COLLECTION by Lorenzo Vidal - includes perfumes, skin care and
body care lines. Now available for distribution in the U.S. market by Granducati USA
with offices in Weston, Florida.
